You Made Someone Smile!

Are you on this page because you received a card? If yes, thank you! You did something
that made someone's day a little brighter.
If you are here without a card, thank you, as well! And read on, maybe you will find
yourself getting a card, too!
Did you ever see the movie "Pay It Forward"? I did and I loved it! It is remarkable what
one simple act of kindness can do for someone else. Something as simple as holding a door
for someone when their hands are full, retrieving a can off of a high shelf in the grocery
store for someone who can not reach, letting someone go ahead of you in a line or at an
intersection, all of these acts are simple enough in and of themselves, but make day to
day existence so much happier. Think about the times someone has done that for you. It
may not have changed your life, but it certainly uplifted your moment, and possibly
encouraged you to then let someone else go first or hold that door for the next person.
They then might just do something nice for the next person! The positive chain of events
continued. And when you look for good things, you see more of them!
Now think about the times when the opposite has happened.
Someone lets a door close on you, they walk past you as you struggle
in the store, they race ahead of you in a line or nearly run you over in
at the intersection. That one simple act of rudeness can nearly ruin
your day. You may also have then been less likely to have a positive
attitude in the next situation you found yourself in, thereby
continuing the chain of negative events.
What would you rather be part of, uplifting someone's moment or
ruining their day?

Humor me and for just a moment imagine a world where good old fashioned politeness was commonplace again.
People said please and thank you, they helped others, they smiled. It just seems so much more pleasant to me
than the world we live in.
For instance, I am currently writing this at Christmas time.
Let's face it, this season either brings out the best or the
worst in people. I've experienced both when out shopping
this year, my first season trying to shop with an infant and
stroller in tow; from the woman who offered to carry my
bags to my car in the rain while I juggled my infant in a
stroller, to the woman who nearly trampled me to get to
the handicapped stall when other stalls were open, leaving
me waiting to get in there with the baby. I have really made a concerted effort to make myself part of a
positive chain of events. I want my daughter to live in that idyllic world but I am realizing that to see change,
I must not only make the change I want to see but actively work at it.
Change is hard and it will not happen overnight. I know in my heart that while bad things make a big splash,
kindness has sort of a ripple effect. Both of them move and make change, the ripple effect just might take a
little longer and go a little less noticed. While it might be slower than I'd like to see, it will happen if enough
people believe in seeing it through.
So, if you are here because you received a card, PLEASE PASS IT ON!!! If you have not received a card,
keep doing good deeds because I am out there handing them out and you never know when I'll catch you doing
something good!
If you would like to further take part in my project, please contact me at jessica@puppyplease.com and I will
be happy to get you more cards to hand out, too!
Also, check out my "The Smile Card Project" blog! You can read about my adventures handing out the cards.
I look forward to people posting who they are, where they are and what they did to get a card!
